Chapter Twelve

A Makeshift Exorcism

W

hile I live and breathe!” Father Yamamoto said to Ellen over the phone. “Hey, you heard about our sleep-walking nun, didn’t you?”

“What? No, Father. That’s not why I’m calling,” Ellen explained.

“Yeah, we call her a roamin’ Catholic, ha-ha!”

Ellen grinned and rolled her eyes. “You sound well, Father Yamamoto. And just so you know, you’re on speaker.”

“It’s good to hear your voice. How are Sue and Tanya?”

“Hi, Father,” Tanya greeted. “I’m fine.”

“I’ve been better, Father,” Sue announced from across the room.

Ellen glanced at Sue in her hospital bed. “That’s why I’m calling. How soon can you come to Forks, Washington to perform an exorcism on Sue? Can you fly out today?”

“An exorcism? Oh, dear. What makes you think she’s possessed?”

Ellen told the priest about their near-death experience.

“How frightening,” the priest exclaimed. “If only I could help you. I have two funerals and a wedding this week. Isn’t there a local priest who can assist you?”

Ellen glanced at Tanya. “Possibly. We’ll ask around.”

“If not, you can perform the exorcism, Ellen. I wouldn’t recommend this to just anyone. You, however, I’ve seen in action. You have the gift.”

Ellen lifted her brows. “Me? I don’t think so. I don’t know how.”

“Sure, you do. You were there. You did as much as I to help Ruth. Your friends, too.”

“Thank you for that last part, Father,” Sue said. “I was beginning to worry that you’d forgotten the part that Tanya and I played.”

“Never! You ladies were fantastic!”

“I recall we used incense to purify the room and to protect us from possession,” Ellen said, “but we’re in a hospital, and I don’t think I can burn anything in here without setting off the fire alarm.”

Tanya shook her head. “There’s no way.”

“You can use sound to cleanse the room,” the priest said. “You can use it to cleanse Sue, as well.”

“Sound?” Ellen glanced at Tanya, who shrugged.

“You’ve seen the mass, haven’t you? You’ve seen the altar boys ring the bell during the consecration of the host?”

Ellen bit on her lower lip. “Um, I suppose so.”

“Bells, cymbals, rattles, drums—all have been used to clear negative energy and to purify spaces and people. Use prayer and intentions in combination with sound, Ellen. Do you have a bell? If you don’t, they are usually carried in hospital gift shops for this very purpose.”

“Really? I’ve never heard of that.”

Tanya shrugged again.

“Remember to tether her to the bed,” Father Yamamoto continued. “Her strength will surprise you, if she is, indeed, possessed.”

Ellen glanced around the room for something to use to bind Sue to the hospital bed. “My dog’s leash could work.”

“Sounds kinky,” Sue said with a laugh.

“The leash would work perfectly,” the priest said. Whether he hadn’t heard Sue’s comment or was just ignoring it, Ellen wasn’t sure. “You have a dog?”

“His name is Moseby. He’s a rescue my husband found.”

“What a blessing. And do you still have some of the holy water I gave you?”

“Yes.”

“If Sue is possessed, it will likely cause a rash, possibly boils, so use sparingly.”

Ellen shuddered and glanced again at Sue.
